Fresh Find: Spaghetti Ice Cream

Thursday, February 28, 2008

Spaghetti Ice Cream, which is made by squeezing homemade vanilla gelato into spaghetti-like strands topped with pureed strawberries for the sauce, grated white chocolate for the parmesan cheese and accompanied with brownie "meatballs," can be found at Grasso Roberto, 4709 Liberty Avenue, Bloomfield.

Here's something you've probably never tried:

Spaghetti ice cream

It's newly available in, appropriately, Pittsburgh's Little Italy neighborhood of Bloomfield.

Grasso Roberto Cafe is serving this not savory but sweet dish, which is made with vanilla gelato, extruded a la pasta, and topped with a sauce of pureed strawberries. The Parmesan cheese is grated white chocolate. And you even get two "meatballs" -- brownies. The dessert costs $4.25.

"It's amazing what you can find on the Internet," says owner Dana Acton, who was searching for recipes for soy gelato when she found the Spaghetti Ice Cream Co. in Fort Worth, Texas (www.spaghettiicecream.com).

She ordered one of the machines, which extrudes her own homemade gelato. She makes the meatballs by rolling up pre-made brownies.

"It's fun," she says, and she looks forward to having more fun with the machine when the weather warms. "We could use the chocolate [gelato] and make a wheat pasta ..."

Grasso Roberto is at 4709 Liberty Ave. across from St. Joseph Catholic Church. Call 412-687-2014.
